Thanks for sharing your adventure and meal. I sent it to my husband as I'd love to try to replicate some of the flavors and magical touches. Just one dish at a time, and I think we could memorize it. We cook magical food from local organic farmers and sustainable fisheries every day and savor them directly across the country from you, in the rural Pacific Northwest on the Salish Sea. I'm going to check out the chef's memoir too, see if our library has it. Great writing too. So many layers.
I love that, thank you for sharing…there’s something about the simplicity of allowing food to be food, let the flavors speak for themselves, rather than fodder for something more fancy. For me it’s similar to leaning into my authenticity. No more, no less, because to be enough (rather than extra) is everything.
oooh, let me know what you think ~ I’ve been considering starting an online book group reading memoirs of women in recovery…I’d love to know your thoughts…
I'd totally do that. The issue of course is AA's anonymity at the level of press, radio, and film. Is Substack "press?" Or do you mean through a different on-line method? I also know it's possible to "write around" the specific 12-Step or other support program that one follows or is engaged in. Your thoughts? Thanks for bringing this up.
i was thinking more of a self-selecting/self-identifying book group w a zoom link, and with the welcoming premise that “everyone has something to recover from.”
Sounds fun, but I live in a remote rural area without reliable access to Zoom. You are inspiring me to re-read my favorite alcohol and drug recovery memoirs, Mary Karr's Lit, Leslie Jamison's The Recovering, and Amy Liptrot's The Outrun.
The first two are also favorites of mine, but I don't know The Outrun. I will check it out. Caroline Knapp's Drinking: A Love Story is extraordinary if you haven't read it.
Yeah, the rural library has the book! I ordered it! It will be delivered by a Bookmobile, a big old bus lined with books. I'm a recovering addict who supports other women addicts and am always grateful to read my sisters' experience, strength, and hope. Thanks for that link, Sarah.
I loved hearing about the adventure and experience on the boat out and again on the trip back in. (And OMG THE RAIN 😭😭) I can’t wait to see you again my friend. 🤍🤍🤍
I know you will love the Outrun! I haven't read Knapp's memoir for a long time. Thanks for the reminder. I'll re-read that one too!
