On this 33.5 billion dollar American “holiday,” I’m readying myself for the myriad of images that will flood my social media stream, the idealization of motherhood that continues to carry on. I’m not criticizing these photographs per se, and I certainly have more than a few of my own, but these photographs are not the only representation and certainly not the only truth.
Lovely Sarah. And people need to remember that all mothers are not necessarily comfortable in their role. Too much idealization and the person might feel shame.
Thanks Becky ~ when Evan was born, their pediatrician told me there would be moments and it was normal to want to kill my child. I know that’s not the sentiment that many women want to hear, and I can’t imagine he said the same to everyone, but I know can’t how much that helped as I struggled with being mostly alone in an unfamiliar city. We get through the best we can, hopefully not leaving too many wounded along the way.
Thank you Sarah for your wonderful words! Mother’s Day can be a fraught day, with many ups and downs. Your contributions are so welcome!! And best of luck to Noah in Brooklyn - having a child in New York is such a great reason to go visit! I’ve been enjoying that for 6 years plus! ❤️
thanks beth ~ these are amazing, almost like a shortbread in consistency but the chips stay melty. I usually cut them with a butter spreader knife into strips first, the break into smaller pieces. you should buy the cookbook 😋
I saw that! I think I might buy that one for my friend as a gift and the other for myself. I love how the recipes are described as simple, many using just one pan/not a lot of ingredients - that's how I like to bake! ☺️
so when i made the brown butter chocolate chip cookie bark for noah, i mistakenly only used dark brown sugar (no raw) and oh my! i think might be a keeper adaptation!!
Special words woven so beautifully to express your sentiments (and mine). Thank you. Happy Mother's Day. Another beginning and another good-bye with Noah. 💜
I don’t think I said so much but your “what’s your story” packed a wallop in the best of ways, offering a form of forgiveness for the times I have shown up for my kids with the best intentions, yet imperfectly.
thanks susanna ~ he’s giving me a good excuse to come to the city with greater frequency!!

And Sarah the Cookie Bark is out of this world delicious!! Thank you for including this recipe….a keeper for sure!
the whole cookbook is amazing! the last time i made them i mistakenly
only used dark brown sugar (instead of the two sugars) and i think it was better than the “original” recipe 😋

Of course I was hoping you'd include the recipe! I wonder if you cut the pieces rather than just broke them up for the photo?
